My "Word" for 2020, New Decade with a New Vision

Last year I wrote a blog post about how to choose your word for the year. (You can read the post by clicking here.) I am not typically excited by practices like this, but I find this one really helpful and think you will too.

Choosing a “word for the year” is simply being very intentional about how you plan to spend your year. Your word for the year represents how you want to feel, what you plan to do, and why you want to do it. It’s attacking the year with an underlying plan, so you aren’t just winging it. The best part is, when you look back on your year you get to look back at your successes, failures, and all the lessons. You’ll easily be able to celebrate the wins and see where you went wrong at times.

Last year, I chose 2 words- GIVE and ACTION. I truly wanted to see how much better my life would be if I focused on giving. In the past I would always think about giving and doing more, but then life got busy and my hopes of giving more would go on the back burner. That’s why I added the word action. Too often I would sit back and wait for a perfect time to do things, and then of course… never doing them. Well in 2019, I took action like never before! I literally would have that song from the 90s “Action” play in my head and get moving (OMG listen to this song, such a blast from the past!!) If I wanted something, I went for it. I put thought into it of course, but I wouldn’t over-analyze anything.

“It’s easy to sit up and take notice, what is difficult is getting up and taking action” – Honore de Balzac

From a year of ACTION I saw many things. I saw times I was over-zealous and exhausted myself. I saw times that I bit off more than I can chew, times I over-promised and didn’t take other commitments and my family into account. I learned SO much about my limits and capabilities. In contrast, I saw areas of my life where I can shine with a little focused effort. I learned that saying “yes” to things on your heart is the very best thing you can do. I learned that there is no limit to the amount of love I have to give. I saw that the only real limits are the ones we set- some limits we set on purpose and others out of fear. When you put ACTION over FEAR you will beat your fears- every. single. time.

“When you start taking consistent action, you will see results.”- Marie Forleo

WHAT’S YOUR WORD OF 2020?

A few months ago I made an “action” decision to enroll in a life coaching certification program. I had so many reservations because being a “life coach” isn’t exactly what I want to be, but what I truly want is to have the skills of a life coach, but to use them a bit differently. I am learning so much in a short period of time!

One thing I find very interesting is the 6 core needs of humans according to the course developer. Some are needs of the personality, and others are needs of the spirit. I was really struck by the concept that human beings have a spiritual NEED to contribute! The more I read and did research of my own the more it became clear how important this really is, and how once you fulfill this need you will live a life filled with with a sense of purpose and joy.

So I’ve decided that my word of 2020 will be CONTRIBUTION. I want to focus on contribution in all areas of life- from family, friends, community, and even to you! I’m really excited about this year because I feel the action steps put forward in 2019 will definitely help with this year’s word choice of contribution because “an object in motion tends to stay in motion.”

So what’s your word of 2020? What do you want to accomplish? How do you want to feel? How do you want to make others feel?

My hope for you is that this is your best year yet! Stay with me, kid. I’ll help you every step of the way!
